Dads everywhere can thank Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington.

Dodd was the daughter of an American Civil War veteran who heard a sermon on Mother's Day, which inspired her to create a day for Dads.  Dodd's father had cared for his six children after their mother passed away while giving birth to the sixth child.  Thanks to Dodd's efforts, Father's Day was born, and Spokane, Washington was the first city to celebrate it.

President Calvin Coolidge was the first to support plans for a national day to honor Fathers in 1924, but it wouldn't be until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson would sign a proclamation calling for Father's Day to be celebrated.  The date would be the third Sunday in June.

1972 saw President Richard Nixon sign the law that made Father's Day official.

Behind Christmas, Valentines Day and Mother's Day, Father's Day is the fourth biggest holiday for sending cards with about 72 million sent every year.  While 50% of all Father's Day cards are given to fathers, about 20% are purchased to give to husbands.

Here's a few more facts and an in-depth history of the holiday. Happy Father's Day!
